About Suspension
A tall stone suspension tower with twin pointed arches rises through the upper half of the canvas, its cables fanning out in fine pale lines against a flat grey sky. In the foreground on the right, a woman in a red coat-dress holds a large white umbrella and carries a dark handbag, walking away from the viewer. Behind her, smaller figures move in both directions, some under red umbrellas, others under white ones, painted as loose vertical strokes of black, red and cream.
The wet deck is worked in horizontal drags of grey, ochre and rust, with long smeared reflections beneath every figure. A street lamp on the left and a dark railing on the right frame the crowd. The mood is quiet and damp, with the single red dress holding the eye against an almost monochrome bridge.
Works in an entry hall, a hallway with a console table, or a living room with grey or charcoal walls, where the red reads as the one accent. Pairs with black metal frames, a dark leather chair, pale timber floors and warm lamp light. Suits city apartments and narrow walls that need height.
