Nine women are scattered across a deep blue field of water, each shown from the shoulders up with their faces turned in different directions. Some smile at the viewer, others look away to the side. Hair ranges from red to blonde to dark brown, and most are slicked back by the water.
Below the surface their bodies dissolve into swirling strokes of lilac, pale yellow, pink, turquoise and white, like sunlight breaking over ripples. The blue background is saturated and fairly flat, so the broken, bright colour in the submerged figures stands out. The thick, visible brushwork makes this read as a painting rather than a photograph.
