About Maria Island Painted Cliffs
The right half of the picture is taken up by a tall sandstone headland, its face marked with horizontal and swirling bands of ochre, honey yellow, rust and chalky white. The layered rock steps down towards the water on the lower right, flattening into a ledge of shelved stone worn smooth. On the left, shallow water runs in over rocks in blues and greens, with white foam breaking in a low line across the middle distance. A dark strip of low scrub and trees closes the far shore.
Above it all sits a clear, unbroken blue sky that deepens towards the top of the canvas, with a few wind-shaped trees perched on the cliff edge. The character is bright and open, a hot midday coastline where the warm rock and cool water sit directly against each other.
Suits a living room or dining room with white or pale grey walls, timber floors and linen upholstery. The ochre rock warms rooms that lean cool, and the blue sky picks up navy cushions or blue ceramics. Works well above a long sideboard, a sofa or a coastal-style dining table.
