About The Affair
Two large poppies fill the upper left of this portrait canvas, one tilted forward to show a small yellow and white centre, the other turned slightly away. Their petals are built from deep crimson and near-black reds, with darker creases marking each fold. Thin dark stems drop to the lower edge, where narrow ochre, brown and rust leaves fan out like grass blades. The background is a scraped, mottled grey with patches of cream and pale yellow near the top corner.
Along the right side, ribbons of red and black paint run down the canvas in loose vertical drips, a deliberate contrast to the softly rendered flowers. The character is quiet but bold: two saturated reds set against a worn, plaster-like grey, with the drips adding a modern, unfinished edge.
Works well on a pale grey, white or concrete-look wall in a living room, bedroom or hallway, where the red reads as the single accent. Pairs with charcoal linen, timber and brushed steel, and suits rooms that already carry red cushions, a rug detail or a burgundy throw. Browse more floral art, red art, all hand-painted oil paintings.
