About The Artichoke
A single globe artichoke fills the centre of this square composition, tilted on a diagonal with its thick pale stem running down to the lower left corner. The head is built from tightly overlapping scales in sage and olive green, each tipped with a small rust-coloured point and lit from the upper left so the left side of the bulb glows and the right falls into shadow. A curled leaf twists away from the stem near the base.
The background is a patchwork of warm browns, burnt amber and a soft yellow glow at the top left, with visible cracks, crease lines and a faint stamped floral motif printed at the upper right. A small dark insect shape sits near the top edge and a cream leaf print appears at the left. The mood is rustic and kitchen-table simple, more a study of one vegetable than a decorative flourish.
Suits kitchens, dining rooms and pantry walls where timber, terracotta and copper already appear. It works above a sideboard, beside open shelving of glass jars, or in a country-style eating area.
