About The New Morning
A woman sits with her back to the viewer, filling the centre of this square composition. Her blonde hair is gathered into a loose, low twist at the nape, and the line of her spine and shoulder blades is drawn in soft warm shadow against pale skin. From the waist down she is wrapped in deep crimson fabric that falls in heavy folds to the lower edge, with lighter rose highlights catching along the ridges. Her left arm reaches back, hand resting flat on the drapery.
The background is divided into blocks of ochre, cream and a band of dark brown across the lower left, with faint scratched marks in the upper left panel. Tones are muted and sunlit, with no hard detail anywhere except the figure. A signature sits in the lower right. The mood is quiet and still, a private early-morning moment rendered in warm, restrained colour.
