About Three Ballerinas One
Three simplified female figures stand on a flat orange ground beneath a pale blue sky, the horizon running as a straight line just below the centre. Each dancer is reduced to a wide bell-shaped skirt, a slim dark torso and a small round head topped with a dark feather or hat. Two figures at the left overlap, one in warm amber-orange, the other in deep burgundy, their thin stick legs ending in beaded points on the ground. The third, in dark maroon, sits lower at the right with one arm curved overhead.
The whole surface is worked in thick, dragged paste so the sky and ground carry a rough plaster-like grain that catches light. Arms are drawn as dotted curving lines, giving the impression of raised limbs mid-turn. It is a quiet, warm-toned painting with a decorative, folk-dance feel rather than a literal ballet scene.
Warm and graphic enough for a dining room, hallway or living area with white or sand-coloured walls. It works above a low timber sideboard or a tan leather sofa, and sits well with terracotta pots, rattan and woven rugs. The pale blue sky keeps it from feeling heavy in smaller rooms.
