About Three Ballerinas Two
Three elongated dancers stand side by side across a warm orange field. The two on the left wear full skirts in pale coral and cream, their bodices white with fine dark trim, arms raised as thin dark lines that link to the third figure. She is taller, dressed in a deep burgundy-red skirt that spreads into a wide bell, her bodice the same dark red. Each head is a small oval with a tilted cap of paint, features left out. Legs taper to fine points where they touch a band of red ground across the lower third.
The background is built up in a rough, scratched impasto that catches light across the whole canvas, so the flat orange reads as worked and uneven rather than plain. The mood is light and buoyant, the three figures caught mid-step with no detail beyond gesture and colour.
Suits a living room, hallway or bedroom with warm neutrals, terracotta tiles or timber floors. The orange and deep red sit well against white or cream walls and pair with rattan, brass lamps and rust cushions. A good fit above a sideboard, a bedhead or a long sofa where the horizontal line of dancers can spread out. Browse more women in art, people and figures, abstract oil paintings.
