About Variation for Violin II

Five violins stand side by side across this square composition, cropped so the scrolls and tuning pegs reach the top edge and the bodies fill the lower half. The long black necks run the full height in thick strokes, with paint running down in fine drips over a pale background of white, grey, lemon and soft pink. Each body is blocked in a different colour: red at far left, yellow and turquoise in the centre, orange and red-violet on the right, with black f-holes drawn in loose, confident outlines.

The colours overlap rather than sit neatly inside the shapes, so blue washes into white and orange bleeds across a neighbouring body.
