About Winter River
A wide river fills the lower half of the image, its surface washed in soft indigo and pale grey with streaks of bare white paper left to read as ice or glare. Dark, almost black timber lines both banks: a dense low thicket on the left and a taller stand of bare upright trunks on the right, their thin branches flicked in with a fine, dry stroke. Behind them the sky lifts into a wash of pale lemon yellow surrounded by cool blue clouds, with the light sitting just above the horizon.
The paint is left deliberately loose, with wet edges bleeding into one another, granulated pooling along the waterline and small spatter marks across the foreground. The mood is quiet and cold, an overcast winter afternoon rather than a dramatic sunset, and the whole scene holds together on a narrow blue and grey range.
Suits a calm bedroom above the bedhead, a living room with pale grey or oatmeal walls, or a home office where you want something quiet behind a desk. It works with white timber, linen upholstery and brushed nickel or chrome fittings, and sits well beside other blue and grey watercolour pieces or coastal photography.
