About Woman
A kneeling female nude is drawn with one continuous black contour line, the arms lifted and the head tilted back so the chin points upward. The line thickens and thins as it travels, looping at the breast, hip and heel, and leaving the body open so the background shows through. Behind her the canvas is filled with loosely brushed squares of orange, tangerine and pale yellow, laid on in short flat strokes that let cream and white patches break the colour. Broad bands of deep brick red close off the top and bottom edges.
The effect is graphic and warm at once: a spare drawing sitting on a field of heat, with the painted patchwork doing the work that shading would normally do.
Works in a living room or bedroom with white or charcoal walls, where the orange field acts as the one strong colour in the room. Suits mid-century timber furniture, tan leather and black metal frames. Hang it above a sideboard or bedhead, or pair it with a second line-drawn figure for a matched set.
