About Three Figures in Red
Three tall, tapering figures stand close together near the centre of the canvas, each painted in strong scarlet and crimson with small squared black heads and thin dark arms. The bodies narrow to points at the base, ending over vertical strokes of white and grey that read as light on the ground. Behind them the background is built from overlapping blocks of pale grey, white, soft blue and dusty pink, laid on with a knife so the weave of the canvas shows through. A block of deep red anchors the lower right corner, with a band of black and flecks of yellow and blue at the left.
The character is quiet but bold: the figures are stripped back to silhouette, and the red does all the talking against a cool, worn-looking wall of greys.
Works in a living room above a low grey or charcoal sofa, in an entry hall where the red reads from a distance, or in a dining room with white walls. Pairs with black metal frames, concrete or timber surfaces, and cushions or rugs that pick up the same scarlet. Browse more red art, people and figures.
