Deep sky views that pull focus at night

Why space art

Dark prints need more wall around them than most people allow

A night sky image reads as a solid dark rectangle from across the room, so the space surrounding it is doing half the work.

Space imagery is mostly black, and black behaves differently on a wall than a bright landscape does. It visually recedes, then suddenly comes forward as a heavy block when you walk past. That is why a single dark print crowded between a bookshelf and a doorway looks like a hole in the wall. Give it clear wall on both sides, hang it where you can step back at least two metres, and it settles into depth rather than weight.

Go bigger than feels safe. Under about 75cm wide, the detail in a nebula or a lunar surface turns to mud and you lose the reason you bought it. For a sofa or bed, aim for two thirds of the furniture width. Watch your lighting too, as glossy finishes mirror ceiling downlights straight back at you on dark images, so matte is the safer call. Warm greys, timber and brass sit well with these; cool blue-white walls flatten them.
