New York, framed on your wall

Why New York art

City prints live or die on how much dark you can carry

Most New York images are night images, and a dark canvas behaves very differently on a wall than a bright one.

Night skylines and rain-slicked streets are largely dark tone with small bright points. On a pale wall that contrast is strong and the canvas reads as a window. On a dark or heavily textured wall the image closes up and the lights stop carrying. Before you buy, look at where the piece will hang at night under lamplight, not just in daytime. That is when city art does most of its work.

Skyline panoramas need width more than height: allow at least two thirds the width of the sofa or bed below, and hang the centre around 145cm from the floor. A 150 x 50cm stretched panorama beats three small squares trying to do the same job. Keep the palette in mind too — warm amber city lights sit well with timber and brass, while cool blue-grey dusk shots suit concrete, black metal and white walls.
