Square canvases that hold a wall

Why square

A square fits walls where a landscape print simply runs out of room

Chimney breasts, alcoves, the space between two windows and narrow hallway runs all take a square far more comfortably than a wide print.

The mistake people make with square art is buying it too small. A square has no width to carry the eye, so it holds less wall than a landscape print of the same area. A 50cm square that looks generous on screen disappears above a three-seater. As a rule, go one size up from your instinct: 90cm to 100cm for a sofa or bedhead, 60cm for a bedside or console.

Centre the middle of the canvas around 145cm from the floor when it hangs on its own, or 25cm to 30cm above the back of a sofa. For grids, keep gaps at 5cm to 8cm and identical on every side, or the block looks crooked even when it is level. Square crops push the subject to the middle, so busy all-over patterns can feel crowded. Pick pieces with some quiet space around the subject.
