Which photo works best for a charcoal portrait?
Charcoal is all about light and shadow, so a photo with clear light coming from one side works beautifully. Colour or black and white photos are both fine, because the artist works in tones, not colours. Faces should be sharp, with the eyes clearly visible. Phone photos are fine, and you can upload up to three photos if you want people or pets from different shots combined.

What paper is a charcoal portrait drawn on?
Your portrait is hand-drawn on heavyweight drawing paper, chosen to suit charcoal. It is a one-off original made by hand, never a print.
Can I ask for changes once the artist has started?
Charcoal can be lifted and reworked a little while the artist is drawing, so small adjustments are often possible. Bigger changes, such as moving a person or changing the layout, are much easier before work starts. That is why we agree the drawing with you first, with unlimited changes.
How is it packed and delivered?
Framed portraits arrive ready to hang. Unframed portraits ship flat and protected, so they arrive without folds or creases. Delivery is free anywhere in Australia. See dispatch and delivery for details.
Can I frame it myself, and how do I look after it?
Yes. Choose Unframed and it arrives flat in a standard size (40 x 50, 50 x 60, 60 x 90 or 75 x 100 cm), so a ready-made frame or your local framer can fit it. Or choose one of our frames on this page, with a mat board and clear Perspex, and it arrives ready to hang. Charcoal can smudge if touched, so frame it behind glass with a mat (mount) that keeps the drawing off the glass. Until it is framed, keep it flat and do not touch the surface. Hang it out of direct sun and away from damp rooms such as bathrooms.
How long does it take?
Allow 21 to 28 days from your order to delivery. That covers the drawing proof, your approval, the finished artwork and delivery. For Christmas, please order by 10 November.
