Which photo works best for a watercolour portrait?
Watercolour loves light. A bright, evenly lit photo with soft shadows gives the best result, and a simple or plain background lets the washes of colour do the work. Faces should be in focus with the eyes clearly visible. Phone photos are fine, and you can upload up to three photos if you want people or pets from different shots combined.

What paper is a watercolour portrait painted on?
Your portrait is hand-painted on artist-grade watercolour paper, chosen to suit watercolour. It is a one-off original made by hand, never a print.
Can I ask for changes once the artist has started?
Watercolour sinks into the paper and cannot be painted over the way oil can, so small touch-ups are possible but a big change after painting starts may mean starting again on a new sheet. That is why we agree the drawing with you first, with unlimited changes, before any paint goes on.
How is it packed and delivered?
Framed portraits arrive ready to hang. Unframed portraits ship flat and protected, so they arrive without folds or creases. Delivery is free anywhere in Australia. See dispatch and delivery for details.
Can I frame it myself, and how do I look after it?
Yes. Choose Unframed and it arrives flat in a standard size (40 x 50, 50 x 60, 60 x 90 or 75 x 100 cm), so a ready-made frame or your local framer can fit it. Or choose one of our frames on this page, with a mat board and clear Perspex, and it arrives ready to hang. Paper work is best framed behind glass, with a mat (mount) so the paper does not touch the glass. Hang it out of direct sun, because sunlight fades watercolour over time, and away from damp rooms such as bathrooms.
How long does it take?
Allow 21 to 28 days from your order to delivery. That covers the drawing proof, your approval, the finished artwork and delivery. For Christmas, please order by 10 November.
