Why multi-panel
The gaps between panels are part of the composition, not a flaw
A panel set only works when the spacing is deliberate, because the wall showing through becomes a line inside the picture.
Most people hang panel sets too far apart. The gap should be small and consistent, usually 4 to 6 cm, so the image reads as one painting rather than three separate pictures that happen to match. Mark the outer edges first, then work inwards. Because these are hand-painted in oils, the brushwork runs across the join, and a sloppy gap breaks the line the artist painted through it.
Measure the full set, gaps included, and keep it to roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture below. Centre the middle of the whole arrangement at about 145 cm from the floor, not the middle of each panel. Panel sets need breathing room, so leave the surrounding wall bare. They fail in busy corners, behind tall plants, or split across a corner join where the two halves sit on different planes.
