About Almond Blossom by Vincent van Gogh
In late January 1890 Van Gogh received a letter from his brother Theo announcing the birth of a son. They had named the boy Vincent Willem, after him. Van Gogh, still at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, wrote back immediately and began painting.
Almond trees flower before anything else in Provence, often while the weather is still cold — the first sign each year that winter is ending. He chose them deliberately, and he painted them from directly underneath, looking up into the branches against the sky. There is no horizon, no ground, no trunk. Just cut branches spreading across a flat field of turquoise, exactly the way the Japanese woodblock prints he collected handled a subject.
He sent it to Paris to hang above the baby's cot. It is the only painting Van Gogh made for a specific wall in a specific family home, and it is by some distance the most peaceful thing he ever produced. Weeks later he suffered one of his worst relapses. The nephew it was painted for grew up to found the museum in Amsterdam where it hangs today.

Why did Van Gogh paint Almond Blossom?
As a gift for his newborn nephew. Theo and his wife Jo had a son in January 1890 and named him Vincent Willem after his uncle. Van Gogh began the painting almost immediately and intended it to hang above the child's cot.
What does the almond blossom symbolise?
New life. Almond trees are the first to flower in the south of France, often while it is still cold, and Van Gogh chose them precisely for that — a birth announcement in the form of a tree that blooms before spring has properly arrived.
Where is Almond Blossom now?
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which was founded on the family collection kept by that same nephew, Vincent Willem van Gogh. The painting he was given as a baby is now one of the most visited works in the building.
Why does it look like a Japanese print?
Because Van Gogh meant it to. He collected Japanese woodblock prints and studied them closely, and this picture takes their devices directly — branches cropped by the edge of the frame, a flat unmodulated background, no horizon and no ground, and forms held by dark outline.
When was it painted?
February 1890, at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, about five months before his death.
