Why purples and pinks
Violet and pink shift more under household light than almost any other colour
The same print can read clear lilac at midday and dusty mauve by lamplight, so where you hang it matters as much as what you hang.
Violet sits at the edge of what warm light can render. Under a 2700K globe, the red end of the spectrum lifts and a cool lilac drifts towards grey-brown, while magenta pushes hotter and reads almost coral. Before you commit to a spot, hold a coloured cushion or fabric swatch on that wall at night as well as in daylight. If the colour dies after dark, the wall needs cooler globes or the print needs a brighter position.
Purples and pinks fight beige. Against a cream or warm-taupe wall the violet tends to go muddy; against white, soft grey, or a green-grey they stay clean. Pinks are the exception and sit happily next to warm timber and terracotta. For scale, aim for roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of your sofa or bedhead width and centre the work about 145cm from the floor. Two or three smaller pieces spaced 5 to 8cm apart read as one block.
