Fresh oils straight off the easel

Why new work

New work is where you find a painting nobody else has hung yet

The newest pieces are usually the ones artists are experimenting with, so the palettes and handling are less predictable than the long-running favourites.

Most people scroll the bestsellers first, which is how the same four paintings end up in half the houses on a street. New arrivals are less settled. Judge them the way you will actually live with them: open the image large, then step back from your screen a couple of metres. A painting that still reads clearly at that distance will hold a wall. One that only works up close usually goes quiet above a sofa.

Because this collection jumps between abstracts, botanicals and animals, unify by palette and frame rather than subject. Three pieces sharing the same warm neutrals will hang together even if one is a giraffe. Over a sofa, aim for a painting about two-thirds the width of the furniture, centred around 145cm from the floor. Avoid scattering several small canvases across a big wall; one large piece almost always beats four polite ones.
