The thing that makes a modern canvas work in a room is mass and colour balance, not the detail you see standing close.

Photographs flatten oil paint. What you cannot see on a screen is the ridge of a palette knife catching the light, or the way a dark passage sits half a centimetre proud of the canvas. That texture is why a hand-painted modern work holds a wall that a flat print cannot. Walk back three metres in your room before you decide on size, and judge the shape of the colour, not the brush marks.

Match the painting to your largest block of colour, usually the sofa or the rug, rather than the wall paint, which changes every few years anyway. Over a three-seater, aim for a canvas about two-thirds the sofa width, with 20 to 25 centimetres of clear wall between frame and cushions. Centre it at roughly 145 centimetres from the floor. The common failure is a small canvas floating high on a big wall; it looks stranded, not minimal.
